Think of it. It's one in the morning and you tripped over the dog on your way through the living room. That midnight snack that you had planned has now turned into bleeding gums and a missing tooth. There's not much an emergency room can do for you or your tooth. What do you do? It's not as if there's a dental clinic open in the middle of the night.
As dental emergencies go, this would be considered a dental emergency. A dental emergency can also include a sign of infection in the gums from an abscess, facial trauma (such as fractured facial bones or lost teeth), and severe toothaches. These are examples and not the only things that could possibly be wrong.
If you're experiencing an emergency during normal business hours call us to get into the office as soon as possible so that you can be examined as quickly as you can. If the emergency ends up being after normal business hours, you should call the emergency on-call number to be placed into contact with the dentist that is on-call for the office. If you are experiencing excessive bleeding or blinding pain then head to the emergency room so that the bleeding and the pain can be brought under control until you are able to be put into contact with our office and/or our dentist on call.
During your emergency treatment, it is likely that you will receive stop-gap measures that will address the immediate concern. This measure may include tooth extraction. Many emergencies will likely require follow-up treatments. In the case of teeth or a tooth that has been knocked out or even extracted, your follow-up may include an appointment to discuss having dental implants done to replace the tooth or teeth that have been lost.
After your dental emergency has been addressed, it may be necessary for you have several appointments depending on the severity of the issue. For things like fractured jaws and certain forms of tooth loss, it may be necessary for you to have some form of oral surgery to correct the issue.
On occasion, there are patients that believe a dental emergency includes a chipped tooth. In some cases, the need to have a chipped tooth fixed immediately can be a form of an emergency, however, many dentists will not consider this to be threatening to the patient's well-being or health and will recommend that you call as soon as possible to make an emergency appointment during regular business hours. We do not recommend that you go to an emergency room for cosmetic purposes. Capitol Hill Seattle Dentist will be happy to help you in any form of dental emergency that you may be having.
You should always be prepared for a dental emergency. Carrying our contact information with you at all times will help you in seeking treatment as soon as possible so that you can ensure that your chances of positive treatment. The sooner that we're able to see you the more positive the outcome.
